So I have been thinking for about six months now of buying reusable grocery bags so I wouldn't have to use plastic bags anymore. I hadn't found the "perfect bag"...they were either too small, or too expensive (I don't feel like paying $3.50 for one when I need eight or so). I went to recycle my glass and pick up a few things at Whole Foods this afternoon. Lo and behold, they had super cool, nice sized, cute, and cheap bags made from 80% recyled pop bottles for only 99 cents!! I bought my eight! I'll just keep them in my car and take them in with me when I get loose and do my monthly shopping at Wal-Mart, and every other time I shop. They will even replace the bags for free if they get holes or tears. The life of one of these bags will save you from using 1000 plastic bags. Per bag. Too cool. You can't beat that! Here are some other plastic bag facts I found on the internet:
-Plastic bags can take 400-1000 years to break down in a landfill.
-Only 1-3% of bags ever get recycled.
-The use of plastic bags worldwide is 1,000,000 a minute. (Yep. Crazy but true.)
-There are approximately 1,000,000 ocean creatures that die every year from getting entangled in plastic bags that are improperly discarded. (Okay, we're probably not the direct cause of this one, but you get my point.)
So get your bags, look cute, have a guilt-free concious, and recycle, Baby! (Everyone's doing it...)

I LOVE them!! I am totally going to get some this week! I must say that I do recycle my plastic bags at Wal-Mart but this is even better. I have also looked at them and wanted to get some but they were always too expensive, but 99 cents is totally doable!! Thanks Jami!!
Oh my gosh! I'm so excited you're getting some! Aren't they fun?? And, they're pretty ha-uuuuuuge! I'd say they could pack in almost two plastic bags worth of stuff into one. Eliana will like the colors too. Happy shopping, girl!
ooh! i got two hyvee ones about 6 months ago and use them.. but the hyvee ones are 3 dollars (not that i am complaining too much bc when i went through they didn't charge me for them.... ) but they are really heavy duty canvas. Are the whole food ones strong? like to carry canned goods and everything? they are cute ones.. and you guys are ok with taking them to other stores? i took my hyvee ones to walmart once when i went through the self check out..
i also like the hyvee ones because the straps are longer and you can throw them over your shoulder
alsol..jami - did you take that picture?
Ha, ha. No. I found it online. These have pretty long straps and they're not canvas, but are heavy-duty enough. I like that you "shoplifted". He, he. (I totally would have done the same thing by the way.)
Great idea Jami. While I have given up on Walmart (I come home too irritated) I have regularly started shopping at HyVee. They have a lot of the organic stuff I like to get, AND I say "paper". I don't have a handy recycling drawer, so I use a paper sack next to our garbage to throw our newspapers, tin cans, cardbaoard, plastic, etc stuff in. I even caught Brian "seperating" once(I love it) maybe it will become habit for him!
So I got my "bags" yesterday!! I LOVE them! I think Cory even thought they were a good idea!
I am with you Nici that Wal-Mart is freakin' frustrating! Someone convince my husband that it is totally worth spending a little bit more to getting better customer service and not walking out of the store cursing to yourself!!
I just told Brian two weeks ago - I will spend the extra money to shop at Target or HyVee. He agreed (thankfully!)
i TOTALLY agree about the walmart thing.. i go through phases.. where i think i need to get really serious about saving money at walmart.. and same as you. i get frustrated.. waiting in LONG lines.. only have 3 lines open in the whole store, it takes soo much longer. i can shop and get everything done at hy-vee soo much faster! but i am seriously going to go get some whole foods bags to add to my other two hyvee bags!
